Overview

Pakistan has been lagging behind in developing expertise in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS). Very few dared to explore the world of GIS and RS.The work of those who were interested in spatial sciences and the information technologies was hurdled by organizations, which were usually state-owned and their work was considered confidential.

There was little collaboration and professional relationship between these organizations/institutes since the creation of Pakistan. All this has contributed to NUST’s decision to establish the Institute of Geographical Information Systems (IGIS), to focus on the educational needs of students in GIS, RS, space sciences, and related information technologies.

The Institute of Geographical Information Systems presents a number of programs from basic short courses to diploma course to degree level programs like MS and PhD. With the rapid pace of technological development, evaluation and selection of proper policy, plans, scenarios, projects or interventions are very important in efficient use of a country’s resources in all disciplines, from health care to resource management, from urban planning to e-governance, from population census to marketing, and the list goes on.

In this context, GIS, RS and spatial information technology has offered a great potential to capture data through variety of earth observation platforms, and integrate them through their common spatial work station. This advanced approach justifies the involvement of object oriented database structures in the decision making process as this digital framework is an efficient system for the storage of larger volume of data, maintaining data records, data management, data repository and data accuracy for easy access and planning.
