VISIT TO ARMY SURVEY GROUP

The visit to ASG under the supervision of IGIS-NUST was carried out on 19th JAN, 2007. It was aimed as an informatory tour and was the part of 'Remote Sensing and Image Processing' course.

ASG is a Military Organization established in 1983 which focuses on digital map production across the border, hence used for defence purposes. Safe handling, securing and archiving the precious data is also ASG's prime responsiblity as they are a custodian of a tremendous amount of historic and strategic information and data. ASG is also the sister oganisation of IGIS-NUST having close associations between each other.

The IGIS students and faculty members in supervision of Mr.Mubashar were cordially received by Major Zulfiqar. A brief presentation on the activities carried out in ASG was given by Major. Saif. He briefed on ASG capabilities like scanning of maps, georeferencing of raster data, digitization of scanned images, image processing, mosaicing, shahded relief maps etc. After the presentation students were introduced and guided to various sections including

System Administration and Management Section
Scanning and Plotting
Cartographic
Image Processing
GIS Section

After visiting the ASG various departments, the IGIS students and staff were invited for refreshment. The visit was useful for students both in terms of commercial awareness plus the information about the capabilities of Pakistan Army.
